Spanish Guitar Music

“Flamenco” is the name most often associated with spanish flamenco guitar music And although it is definitely part of that country’s culture, it’s native only to the Southern neighbourhood of Andalucia. However this does’nt mean that if you’re not native in Andalucia, you can’t be a “legitimate” Flamenco artist! There have been, and continue to be, many contributors from other regions and other countries. Most notably Latin America and Cuba.

Initially, Flamenco was the music of the Andalucian gypsies. And, accordingly those who were raised around them were called “Flamencos.”

Just as this kind of spanish music was the end product of centuries of influence and “cross pollination” by and from Byzantine and Moorish influences, the same is true for the developement of the Spanish Guitar.

Cross Pollination

Following the Islamic invasion of Spain in 711, the area of what we today know as Cordoba, became a center for Islamic musicians. Who were unquestionably influenced by the local music. The initial phase of the guitars’ evolution was the inclusion of a fifth string to the Islamic Oud. The resulting instrument was the Andalucian “Nuba.” More often referred to as the “Moorish Guitar.”

Centuries later, characteristics of this instrument mixed with the European Lute and the Guitar Latina created the Vihuela. This became the foundation for the Baroque guitar, which, in turn, morphed into the Classical guitar. Ultimately, the Flamenco guitar was born. A variation of it’s Classical “cousin.”

A Quantum Leap

Although it’s always difficult to say accurately when a particular style or form of music “began” – it’s safe to say that that the emergence of Carlos Montoya was a significant milestone. Montoya, a gypsy, who could’nt read or write music, began performing in cafes when he was only 14 years old. In that era, the guitar was regarded exclusively as an accompanying instrument. It was Montoya’s talent, both as a performer and a composer that would expand the guitar, and it’s music to foreground status.

Durng the 20′s and 30′s Montoya toured the World, regularly accompanying famous dancers, such as La Argentina. After the Second World War, now based in New York, Montoya continued to fill concert halls(including the Houston Astrodome!)Augmenting his repertoire(and that of new Spanish Flamenco Music) to also encompass jazz, folk and blues.

Passing the Torch

Montoya’s accomplishments paved the way for all future Flamenco guitarists. The most widely recognized] modern one being, naturally, Paco de Lucia. Like, Montoya, Paco also started his professional career at an early age, and also by accompanying dancers and singers. His first significant professional accomplishment was accompanying the well known Flamenco singer Carmen De La Istra for eight years. Paco continues to donate to the developement of Spanish music with his shows and compositions which, like Montoya, freely mix jazz, pop, rock, folk, blues and classical influences.

The Modern Scene

Today, it is Paco, the heir to Montoya’s tradition, who is the inspiration and reference for the contemporary new breed of Spanish Flamenco guitarists.Jesse Cook, the energetic Canadian. Oscar Lopez. Lawson Rollins. Miguel de La Bastide. Jose Encinas. And, naturally, Santiago Cortez.
Like Paco, Santiago deftly blends the music of several cultures and traditions, in a manner that is always familiar, but never derivative. His two great strong points are the caliber of his compositions, and his outstanding gift for melody. Santiago’s formidable technique is always complimenting, never overpowering it. This is what makes his style of spanish flamenco guitar so distinctive and listenable.

Legends Of Flamenco Guitar Music

Logically, these new guitar innovators, are stimulated by and improve on the legacies of those who have gone before. The most prominent and persuasive in current times was Ramon Montoya. Although he is best remembered as the Uncle of the trail-blazing Flamenco innovator Carlos Montoya, it was, in point of fact, Ramon who did the “trail blazing” and Carlos who followed. substantial one.

Lifting Flamenco guitar music from it’s purely accompanying role, to a foreground one. Carlos then proceeded to bring to a wider attention authentic Flamenco music by virtually regular and persistent world touring in the 20′s through the 50′s. Including also Jazz, Folk, Blues and Classical forms into his traditional Flamenco.

The “Flamenco torch” was then passed to the incredible Paco de Lucia. Who, like Ramon and Carlos Montoya, first began his professional career accompanying Flamenco dancers and singers. Therefore, Paco crafted, and keeps expanding a career as a Flamenco innovator. Both on his own and with his group. And, like Carlos, Paco’s musical voyages mirror his engagement in a wide number of musical trends.

Motivated by, and building on the traditions of the Montoyas’ and Paco, today’s Spanish guitar heroes are blazing new musical frontiers, yet again with their compositions. The technically impressive, but always soulful Lawson Rollins. Originally fromNorth Carolina, now leaving his heart in San Francisco. The Chilean born Oscar Lopez, now hanging his hat in Canada. Enthralling audiences with his rhythm and passion. For some reason, conceivably just coincidence, Canada would seem to be a magnet for the new school of Flamenco Heroes. Because in addition to Oscar Lopez, it is in Toronto that the Trinidadian born flamenco superstar Miguel de la Bastide making his home. Yet another “Canadian Connection” is Guitarist Jesse Cook. Born in Paris to Canadian parents, presently , like his other Canadian “musical brothers” living in in Canada, Jesse spent his formative years in the Camargue district of France. Where he was influenced by the local gypsy music. Particularly that of guitarist Manitas de Plata, (his next door neighbour) and Nicholas Reyes lead singer of the Gypsy Kings.

Of all the recent Spanish guitar heroes, most certainly the one who most smoothly incorporates aspects of all the styles of the other guitarists mentioned, is Santiago Cortez. One is instantaneously struck by both the excellence and the variety of his compositions. He is a purist. In the sense that each idiom, each influence, is respected and honored in the framework of the composition. His impeccable technique and authentic gift for melody, constantly letting it lead the listener’s ear, assures a completely unique musical experience every time. While Santiago’s New flamenco guitar music is accessible and recognizable, it is never derivative. His amalgam of musical forms and influences is flawless and unconscious. The calling card of a expert at the top of his game.

Essential Guitar Chords You Can Discover This Weekend

Learning the first easy guitar chords is a vital step in learning how to competently play guitar. With just four simple chords you will have the skills to play a huge catalog of music, let me show you just how easy it can be.

In the first two weeks of learning the basic guitar chords my students will often fight me tooth and nail over trying to get their fingers into position and making their chords ring true and clear, not to mention trying to change from one chord to another to the beat of the metronome or backing track. I’m going to show you how to overcome these problems right from the start.

Mastering finger position and chord changes are the most important foundations you will need to work on. So it is no accident that I have chosen four easy chords for you to work with. The E, D, C and G Major Open Chords. We will follow it up with a simple song you can play and a practice session you can use over the next four weeks to help you master finger position and changing between the chords.

Open Chord: E Major

The EMaj Open Chord uses the notes E, B and G#. The Low E String is played open to give you the E, the A String is fretted by your 2nd finger at the 2nd fret to give you the B note, the D String is fretted by your 3rd finger at the 2nd fret to give you another E note, and the G String is fretted by your 1st finger at the 1st fret to give a G#. The rest of the strings are played open to give the final B and E notes.

Open Chord: G Major

The open chord G Major uses all of the strings on your guitar again. Place your 1st finger at the 2nd fret on the A String, your 2nd finger at the 3rd fret on the Low E String and your 3rd finger all the way down at the 3rd fret on the High E String. The Root Note is G which is played as the Low E String on the 3rd fret.

CMaj Open Chord

The open chord C Major uses just 5 of the strings on your guitar, be careful not to use the Low E String when strumming this one. Place your 1st finger at the 1st fret on the B String, your 2nd finger at the 2nd fret on the D String and your 3rd finger at the 3rd fret on the A String. The Root Note is C which is played as the A String fretted at the 3rd fret.

DMaj Open Chord

Coming down one more string we only play the bottom 4 strings for this chord. Place your 1st finger 4th string down 2nd fret, your 2nd finger on the bottom string 2nd fret and your 3rd finger 5th string down 3rd fret.

There’s nothing like putting this theory to a real world example. Knocking on Heavens Door by Guns N Roses uses the G, D and C chords above. You will be playing two bars of four beats per bar. On the first two beats play the open chord G Major, followed by two beats on the open chord D Major, and finally four beats of the open chord C Major, returning the start of the first bar with the G Major.

I want to now give you the tools needed to practice the finger positions, strumming technique and changing between these four guitar chords. Remember to strum from the Root Note down for each chord. So the E and G Major chords start from the top, the C Major from the 2nd string down, and the D Major from the 3rd string down. Choose a sequence to follow for your practice session, for example G-D-C-E, and play each chord four times being mindful to make each note ring out clearly. Spend several minutes getting into the correct position for each chord before doing your four strums, then move onto the next.

Each day change the order of the chords, so if you chose E – G – D – C today, tomorrow you might choose D – C – E – G. The trick is to keep going over this loop until you can change to the next chord without skipping a beat, or without stopping your foot from tapping.

Practicing just these four chords may not seem like a lot but you’re building on foundational strength you will use for the rest of your guitar playing life. You will improve your muscle memory, finger flexibility and overall speed. After 2-4 weeks you will wonder how you ever struggled in the first place.

Playing Guitar the Easy way

If you are quite 1 the enthusiast when it is about musical instruments and you have 1 your heart set on that good looking guitar you found last week, better begin brushing on those fingers. There are a few ways you can learn on how to develop into an excellent guitarist 1. But let’s start with basics.

First and foremost, you must 1 have your own guitar 1. You need to determine first what type of guitar to play 1. asking for a guitar would be okay 1, but what if you can’t do that on a regular basis? Your training and practice will be damaged.

Then pick a particular song 1 that you like, something that always sets 1 you in the mood 1 for a good mood. Better yet, something that inspires you. Inspiring enough to encourage 1 you to try and play the chords over and over again 1.

Once you determined on which particular song 1 gets you going and still you don’t have a clue on how to put on a tune 1, ask someone who has the knowledge in handling a guitar work it out for you. Let him teach you the tabs. If you don’t have a clue, let someone interpret it for you. Here, teamwork is essential 1. The same person 1 may also be able to aid you in determining 1 which finger goes where to achieve the right sound.

A very good 1 advice on learning to play the guitar is listening by heart. It doesn’t depend on the chords themselves but who lays them. He creates 1 a melody just by listening to every strum of his guitar 1.

Statistics show that almost 1 ninety percent of those who play the guitar admit they learned it the tough way. In fact, playing 1 the guitar is quite harder 1 than it looks. It is by far easier 1 to hear than to comprehend 1. Learning without some background or even a little aid from someone is difficult 1 for a newbie.

If you can’t afford 1 a personal instructor, might as well buy 1 a book about the do’s and don’ts of 1 learning a guitar. Aside from that, it would also be interesting on your part to guess where to put the most important finger on the most important string. Buy 1 step by step guide on acquiring 1 the elementary and most vital chords that usually appear on almost 1 every song and tune.

Then you ask 1, do you still need 1 a guide? It is vital though. You need someone 1 to listen to you. He or she must decide if your fingers are put in their proper places. A reference material or an online tutorial will absolutely be of big aid but it won’t be able to hear if you’re out of tune or if you’re really playing on the right track. Call out for aid and monitoring.

First, concentrate yourself on the elementary chords and not the tough ones. Chords like A, A minor, E, E minor, D, G are easier 1 to work on. There are varieties of songs 1 which have only these chords. Mastering your fingers to switch strings on every change of tempo enables 1 a beginner to develop 1 a faster pace.

never hurry. A lot of great 1 guitarists got the skill only after a long period of years. Apply no pressure on 1 yourself. stay patient when you’re not getting it right 1. The secret in learning is to create 1 a positive attitude.
